According to an article written by CBC News - Health, starting in September of this year yoga will become part of the physical education curriculum in the province of New Brunswick. Yoga is already part of the curriculum in Nova Scotia and the success of this program is prompting school across Canada to take notice. Currently, the program is only offered to grade 11 and 12 students.
The physical benefits are enormous . Yoga improves flexibility, coordination and strength. It also helps with concentration.
The pressures of high school life can be overwhelming to a teenager - learning the practice of yoga can benefit these kids immensely. The physical, mental and emotional benefits of yoga can help support the stresses of peer pressure, the overwhelming homework load, graduation woes and post secondary pressures. All these factors can contribute to depression and anxiety that many teens face on a daily basis. Having the foundation of yoga practice can easily alleviate these symptoms and make their last years of schooling a lot easier to handle.
This is a fantastic idea - one I hope is adopted throughout the country.
