What was I thinking??? I have never been interested in running, nor have I ever had the inclination of starting a running program. But recently my daughter who has returned from a 6 month adventure in South America asked me to join her in her new adventure. Ok I lied. I have ran before back in the dark ages when I was in high school and the wheel was just invented! LOL! That was many moons ago so to me this is a foreign language. Don't get me wrong, I am in very good shape as I weight train 5 days a week and practice yoga 2 times a week. But the closest I get to "running" is 10 minutes on the treadmill as part of my cardio routine.
We downloaded the Couch to 5K app ($1.99) on our iphones and started our journey on Sunday! Of course, we chose one of the hottest days of the year to get started so I was praying to the Dear Lord to take me to the heavens above now! Thank God for water which I used as a resuscitating device. All joking aside, the app is phenomenal and it walks you through it. It is a nine week program (3 days a week) which starts slow with a warm up and then series of walking to jogging prompts in different time intervals. These increase as the weeks progress.
Today was our second day of week 1 and already I can feel a difference in endurance. I didn't think I would be excited about this but I can not tell a lie - really enjoying it.
I have to admit, the best part of starting a new exercise program for me is shopping! I made a b line to the Running room and got fitted for some new sneakers. I tend to pronate so I wanted to make sure I had the right shoe for running on pavement. $149 for a pair of sneakers? I was buying one pair not the store! Got a pair of new socks and a hand held water bottle (don't leave home without it) I own a lot of Lululemon (I'm sure you can tell by the name of this blog) but I am sure I will find an excuse to get a new outfit soon.
Our goal is to be able to run 5k by the end of this program and hopefully move on to 10k. And if all goes well, we might do a 5k event. But don't hold your breath that remains to be seen.
End of Day 1 and 2 (Week 1)
